About me

Blogger:
Name: Deacon Kevin Muniz
I am a Seminarian for the Diocese of Springfield in Illinois studying to become a Roman Catholic priest. I created the blogs “THE HEART OF A SEMINARIAN” and “JUST ASK THE QUESTION” for no other reason than to share the Faith that I love and continually learn more about the Will of God that I search. CLIMBING UP TO THE TOP

Catholic Times column “In faith, as in life, we take things one step at a time.” (3/12/06) continued.  Click here to read this short column.

This post is a continuation of my column in the Catholic Times.  This is the opportunity to express my feelings on the subject, while allowing you to do the same for a fruitful discussion.  For those who are new to this site, you may leave anonymous or signed comments by clicking on the word “comments” below.

In my column, I shared about the hurdles that I thought were so big my whole life as I pursued a degree in Mathematics.  From multiplication to algebra to calculus to eventually my degree, every step of the along the way, I felt the task ahead was impossible.  And now looking back, I can’t believe I was scared of multiplication.

The truth is that we can achieve any dream, but we must approach it with small steps.  A goal is almost impossible if one would try to tackle it all at one time, but if you break it up into smaller steps then there is no limit to what you can attain.  In my own life right now, I am training for the STL Marathon on April 9th.  The farthest that I have ever ran before was 5 miles, so I did not know how I could run a whole marathon.  In my training, the very first week, I only ran 3 miles thrice and 6miles once.  Every week after that, I gradually increased my distance until last week I ran 20 miles.  How did I even get to that point?  Well, it took trying to reach the goal of 6 miles and increasing a little bit each additional week. The bottom line is that if I trained by trying to run 26 miles each time, and then I would have failed and given up.  Instead I took the time to aim for smaller goals which built on each other.

For another example, just look at Mother Angelica and EWTN.  She start with talks, then publishing little booklets, then radio, then a small little taping of a show, and now a global Catholic network.  It is amazing, but she never once thought at the beginning about a global Catholic media network.  No she just thought of small steps. The faith life is just that, too.  We cannot attain holiness by trying it all at once.  We must continually challenge ourselves with small goals, then in the end you might just have received holiness.
